About Cate

Cate is an illustrator, artist and author based in the beautiful Northern Beaches of Sydney, Australia. She moved here from Edinburgh, Scotland in 2015 and loves the sunshine. She has been working as a full-time freelance illustrator since 2010, and has a background in printmaking.

Cate work mostly in children's publishing on picture books and illustrated texts. Previous clients include Affirm Press, Walker Books, Hachette, Penguin and Barrington Stoke. In 2015 she had her first book published as author/illustrator. She also loves designing for advertising.

In addition to colouring-in, Cate likes to get out of the studio and experience new ways of being an artist. She was illustrator in residence at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children (Sick Kids) in Edinburgh for almost four years and still designs for them. In Sydney she volunteers at Sydney Children's Hospital in Randwick, where she runs workshops with the ArtEx team, and exhibits her work.

Cate is a member of the NSW inc branch of the Children's Book Council of Australia, and designs for them too. She is also a member of SCBWI Australia East and NZ, and won the Penguin Random House Illustrator's Showcase Award in February 2109 at the SCBWI conference in Sydney.

Cate loves to run workshops for kids and has years of experience in school, library and book festival visits. She is always available to pay a visit to inspire kids!

She teaches at an after-school art studio in Northbridge, and is on the Tutor Panel of the City of Sydney-run Pine Street Creative Arts Centre, teaching both adults and kids. When called on, she also works as a Printmaking technician at the Paddington campus of the University of New South Wales.
